Media Space

The term ‘media space’ can me a multitude of different spaces, as media refers to the notion of being ‘between’ transcending boundaries. Therefore media space can be considered to be physical space, like a public sphere, online platforms like Facebook, or simply a space in which an interaction takes place.

The relationship bettwen the audience and the media is the “media space.” This prompts the question  ‘does it take place in the mind, the object of media itself (ie the screen) or somewhere in between?’ Technically all answers are correct, as the space is dependent on a variety of different variables and considerations. However is media and place meaningless without an audience? This follows the philosophical path of ‘If a tree falls in the woods does it make a sound’-  if a media space operates with out an audience, does it really exist? Does an interaction in space have to be meaningful? Or can it simply be meaningless, and hold the same weight?

The concept of a media space in general is a mix of the physical, the digital and the philosophical. It is the interaction and interconnection between media space and audience that provides the answers and the connections. My personal experience with this space comes from my interactions with the online world. As I grew up in the ‘digital age’ I am used to doing all of my work online, even having a media subject in primary school where we learnt how to interact with the internet, and use computer programmes. Spell check, grammar check, and “did you mean….” are all the ‘normative’ allowing my brain to essentially switch into ‘flight mode’ confident that the computer can fill in the blanks, easily deleting rubbishy sentences with just a simple highlight and alt-control-c.

If I was unable to connect to such media spaces today, I wonder how it would shape myself as a person, if it would affect my daily interactions, unable to simple say “just google it” for any unknown answer, stalk the person dating my friend on Facebook in order to ‘suss them out.’ How would I operate on a daily basis if i was unable to access such spaces baffles me, a scary notion of disconnect and being ‘on the outside.’
